Introduction
This series of articles will explore the 9 classes of angels, according to Christian Angelology. In this article, we will be exploring the base level, Guardian Angels, which have the closest contact to us here on Earth. Then we will move on to the different roles and functions of each category of angels. There are three groupings of angels in the hierarchy, call spheres, with each set having its own purpose. The first three classes of this series – Guardian Angels, Archangels, and Principalities – comprise the first sphere.
The original Christian Angelology hierarchy was put forth by Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite in his book De Coelesti Hierarchia in the 4th or 5th century. During the Middle Ages, Christian theologians, such as Thomas Aquinas, continued to develop the hierarchies further by adding their input to the categorization of the different angels.
Guardian Angels are the only class or angels not explicitly named in the Bible, which sets them apart from the rest. There are references to the idea of Guardian Angels such as:
10 No evil shall befall you,
Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;
11 For He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you in all your ways.
12 In their hands, they shall [a]bear you up,
Lest you [b]dash your foot against a stone.
Psalm 91:10-12 New King James Version (NKJV)
Nevertheless, the concept of a personal Guardian Angel has emerged through Christian theology over time and become a well-known aspect of the Christian faith. Guardian Angels appear in other religions around the world, also, such as Judaism, Islam, and Zoroastrian, which gives credence to the existence of these divine-human protectors.
Guardian Angel Overview
In the traditional Angelology hierarchy, Guardian Angels are the lowest on the totem, indicating their service is mostly devoted to the realm of Earth and the daily human life. Guardian Angels act on behalf of God through nurturing humanity with divine love and guidance.
Since Guardian Angels are closest to the mortal realm, their presence can be felt with ease. Many people of faith develop strong bonds with their Guardian Angel through prayer, meditation, and contemplation. A Guardian Angel is a direct link to God.

Guarding Angels watch over individuals and assist when called or absolutely needed. Guardian Angels, never leave one’s side. Assigned to every person at birth. Guardian Angels consistently provide comfort, love, and guidance. It is believed that Guardian Angels will remain with someone even after their death, joining them in Heaven too.
The purpose of Guardian Angels is to divinely watch over and protect the person in their care. Offering guidance in times of challenge, Guardian Angels serve to illuminate one’s spiritual purpose is to fulfill the holy mission of one’s life. However, every person has complete free will, and according to doctrine, a Guardian Angel will not intervene unless called upon.
A Guardian Angel can be immensely helpful but will not dictate one’s life or interfere in matters unless asked. A Guardian Angel must be to be called to assist – unless it is a dire circumstance. It is these awakening circumstances, such as a brush with death or time serious danger that a Guardian Angel will divinely intervene to protect the human they look after.
At times, Guardian Angels even appear in human-form to provide assistance. Stories have documented Guardian Angels coming to rescue people from life or death situations. A stranger appears in the nick of time only to disappear as soon as someone is saved.
(Quick side note: The concept of Guardian Angels taking human form most likely comes from the Hebrew concept of Guardian Angels. According to their interpretation of the scriptures, each person is assigned THREE Guardian Angels at birth. The first Guardian angel is for the physical realm, called the Nefesh. The second is for the emotional realm, called the Ruach. The final Guardian Angel is for the spiritual realm and is called the Neshamah.)
Otherwise, for the most part, Guardian Angels remain invisible helpers. It is more a feeling of their presence, that one will sense. Considering Guardian Angels are beings of divine love and operate at a different frequency when they do initiate contact in the 3D, it may look like a ball of light or radiating mist.
The imagery of Guardian Angels as human figures with beautiful white wings comes from the description of those who have had journeys to the Heavenly realm during meditation, dreams, or altered states of consciousness.
People who have had near-death experiences often return with stories of Guardian Angels escorting them during their time in Heaven. In their natural state, Guardian Angels are slightly bigger than human size and have a luminescent glow to them.
Signs of your Guardian Angel
In the first sphere of Angelology, Guardian Angels, along with Archangels and Principalities, are considered celestial messengers. Guardian Angels have the most direct communication with humans, advising them and giving them spiritual direction.
Their duty is to send messages and bring the person they tend to towards the divine light of God. Because angels contact us from a higher spiritual plane, these messages often take the form of intuitive hunches or premonitory dreams. Finding pennies and white feathers is also a sign your Guardian Angel is nearby. It is also common to see repeating numbers such as 11:11 or a particular animal such as a dove or bluebird.
These clearly have originated in the recent rise of New Age Christianity, but can still be signs of the Divine at work. Fairly quickly, one can determine the method their Guardian Angel uses with them, and this signal becomes a comforting reassurance.
