While your diet certainly has a significant impact on the health of your internal organs, it also affects your external ones. Your skin requires a healthy diet to remain strong and clear. However, it is essential to note that diet alone cannot solve issues like acne, eczema, or warts. For these kinds of issues, you will need to seek treatment from your physician.
Sweet potatoes are a staple of most Thanksgiving dinners. They can work in both sweet and savory dishes, making them one of the most versatile foods on this list. However, they can also provide a huge boost to your skin’s overall health. The nutrient that is most responsible for this is beta-carotene.
Beta-carotene is another antioxidant that can protect your skin from excessive sun damage. If you’re concerned that your skin looks unhealthy, sweet potatoes can also help give it a warmer tone, which is generally associated with good health. Next time your family gets together for a nice dinner, you now have an excuse to ask for extra sweet potatoes!
Try these three easy sweet potato recipes:
Sweet Potato Fettuccine Style Pasta
- 1 large sweet potato (about 1 lb.)
- 3 teaspoons butter
- 1/2 cup of your favorite pesto or light sauce
Step One: Peel sweet potato, cut lengthwise into 1/8-inch-thick slices using a mandolin. Then cut all slices julienne style approximately 1/4-inch-wide strips.
Step Two: Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat; add potato strips, and sauté 6 to 8 minutes or until al dente. (Don’t overcook strips or they will fall apart.) Add pesto, and toss gently to coat. Serve immediately.
Roasted Sweet Potatoes
- Large Sweet Potatoes (as many as you can eat)
- Dipping Dressing of Choice
- Olive Oil, Sea Salt, Pepper, Chili Powder, Butter, Sour Cream
Step One: Preheat the oven to 450º F. Cut sweet potatoes in half and then cut each half into four equal-sized wedges. Arrange the sweet potato wedges on a rimmed baking sheet and drizzle with the olive oil. Sprinkle the sweet potato wedges with sea salt, pepper, and chili powder (optional). Toss the sweet potato wedges to coat thoroughly with the oil and the seasonings.
Step Two: Place into the preheated oven and roast until the potatoes are browned, crispy on the outside and fork-tender on the inside, about 25 minutes. Remove from the oven and serve.
Bonus: Simply poke holes into the whole sweet potato with a fork, (do not peel) bake for approximately 45 to 50 minutes or until tender, and add butter or sour cream.
Sweet Potato Facial Mask
- 1 Large Sweet Potato
Step One: Do not peel, but with a fork, poke several holes into the sweet potato. Bring sweet potato to a boil for approximately 15 to 20 minutes or until it easily falls apart. Save the water.
Step Two: Blend until paste-like and let sit until lukewarm. Apply to face and leave on until dry, approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse face with reserved water daily until gone.
Bonus: This also works great on your hair! Test a small patch of hair as the sweet potato may alter processed hair.
